Timing

Now is a critical time in deciphering the articles about this and that building going LEED, Built Green, 'Green', 'Environmentally-Friendly', or 'Eco'. This is a dedicated blog to the work that the Real Estate industry is doing to quantify Green Real Estate.

I'm definitely curious about this topic. I've built several office spaces over the years, and all had strong sustainability aspects a long-time before they were fashionable.

There are two aspects in my designs, however, that are not part of the LEED "fashion" today that I'd like to see incorporated:

* I make an important part of my design the human element. Phosphorescent lights may be more efficient, but sunlight is a better light for our eyes. Windows that open can make heating and air conditioning more efficient, but natural are can be so powerful in improving our natural environment. Also, there need to be space that meet human needs, and deal with human issues like noise abatement, group size needs, etc.

* After the building design is finished and the building is built, why do then people use such toxic cleaning products, out-gassing furniture, etc. in the ongoing use of the building? Maybe I'm particularly aware of it because of my canary-in-the-mine chemical sensitive partner, but I'm not sensitive but the I'm shocked at the artificial smell of tide in the towels and pesticides I found under the counter in a supposedly eco-friendly hotel.
